The city of Chicago held its first Latino Fashion Week in October 2007 and was recognized by media and industry as the first U.S city to host and celebrate Latino Fashion within a dedicated week of events. Since its inception, Chicago Latino Fashion Week and its featured designers have captivated national attention, and is recognized as the only full week of Latino Fashion in the country. New opportunities and greater recognition have helped to catapult Chicago Latino designers to receive awards and contracts with major retailers. Designer Anna Fong (2007) and Horacio Nieto (2008) each received the award as the winner of the “AOL Fashionista” Designers competition; their lines were selected by Macy’s department stores in Chicago for retail sale. Additionally, designer James De Colon was chosen to design the costumes for the Luna Negra Dance Company, considered one of the best Dance companies in Chicago.
Latinos have always been a significant part of fashion as avid consumers and with the coveted looks of designers Oscar De La Renta, Carolina Herrera and Narciso Rodriguez just to name a few.
Latino Fashion Week celebrates unity and diversity in the town known for its architectural beauty and offers creative show production and mutually beneficial marketing partnerships with some of the most affluent decision makers, buyers, retailers, and associations including the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, the different Chambers of Commerce, nightclubs and members of national and international press from around the world.
This year, on a national and international level, amongst those we expected to host designers: Camilo Pardo – US, from Argentina, Veronica de Canal, Bernito Fernandez; from Colombia, Silvia Tcherassi Atelier.
